What Problem are we Solving?

In 1971, as part of his pioneering work on Total Productive Maintenance, Seiichi Nakajima developed the “Six Big Losses”.

These areas are the cornerstone of OEE improvements to this day:

Equipment Failure

This is an unplanned stop due to failure of equipment, tools, or the absence of operators for the machinery itself. Lack of proactive maintenance is a common cause.

Setup & Adjustments

This is a planned stop that has taken equipment that should otherwise be running and taken it offline. Perhaps this is a shift change, retooling or scheduled maintenance.

Idling & Motor Stops

This is a short stop that could occur very regularly – misfeeds, jams, setting errors, etc – that are often not tracked at all by operators or managers, but they all add up.

Reduced Speed

This is a slower cycle whereby equipment is still running but throughput is below the level that it should be. It could be caused by aging equipment, worn-out tools or user error.

Process Defects

These are production rejects that are identified as part of existing quality control measures. Throughput may be at the desired level but some process failure is causing rejects.

These are cycle-time delays usually associated with a lag between start-up and full production or with shift handovers. They can also be the result of warm-up time lag.

How does it work?

XL810s on Every Line

Each XL810 is a “black box” consisting of a database, a server and a display wallboard for the line. It contains all the information necessary to monitor the uptime and performance of each individual line, based on the output and throughput it is supposed to be achieving.

Input (IoT) Devices

The XL810 requires inputs to measure performance. This could be sensors counting items, scales weighing food, or any other appropriate input device. Each line has a hand-held scanner for the operator to add data like changeovers and downtime reasons.
